Nowadays, video games’ transmedia phenomenon has gotten us consuming more than a cartridge or a CD. It’s undeniable that the video game industry has absorbed every corner available, and we now find related references to them everywhere we go.
Can we talk about gaming easter eggs, especially on TV shows?
We may not notice them sometimes, but many shows use video games as a casual element to keep the story moving. Even as a brief random appearance, video games are there, getting us saying, as the Cap would say, “I get that reference!”
In case you’re wondering, here are some of the most random references we could find:
Gravity Falls - Fight Fighters (Street Fighter)
Gravity Falls is, in my opinion, one of the most fabulous cartoons ever made. It even has excellent video game references! For example, in S1 E10, we can see Dipper fighting what looks like a character from Street Fighter. In addition, you can see the same screen features as the game!
The Simpsons - Bonestorm (Mortal Kombat)
What can we say about the Simpsons that we haven’t said before? Nothing. But what we can say is that in S7 E11, we can relate to Bart’s hype with Bonestorm’s trailer or what appears to be a Mortal Kombat innuendo. The fighting, the violence, the characters. It is truly epic!
The Amazing World Of Gumball - The Last Of Us
If you have watched the show before, you probably already know that The Amazing World of Gumball has a bunch of references everywhere. In S4 E25, Gumball tries to warn Anais that her new friend, Jodie is a parasite. When describing Jodie, Gumball jumps on top of Darwin and fuses with him in a very eerie way, making Darwin look precisely like a Clicker from The Last of Us.
The Powerpuff Girls - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
We are going back to the vintage era of Cartoon Network. We just couldn’t miss an awesome trope in The Powerpuff Girls, from one of the industry's most popular and relevant games ever. In S3 E2, the Major of Townsville tries to play a game like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, featuring a character looking like Link followed by a fairy. There's even an interface based on the original.
My Little Pony - Metal Gear Solid
This is probably one of the weirdest easter eggs someone has ever stumbled upon. A very random Metal Gear Solid hint can be found in the ninth season of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Even MGS creator Hideo Kojima spotted and tweeted all about it when the episode aired!
Did you know about these random easter eggs? If you have stumbled upon other gaming references, let us know in the comment section!
