After a few weeks of intense fighting scenes, orgies, A LOT of dildos, tentacles, and blood, the third season of The Boys is over. Is this the beginning of the end? Possibly. Although none of the stories are resolved, the narrative sure points to what seems to be a glance of resolution. Beware because this won’t be a spoiler-free article.
It’s been a year of “calm.” First, Butcher works for the government, supervised by Hughie. Then, The Boys learn of a mysterious anti-Supe weapon. It sends them crashing into The Seven and chasing the legend of the first Superhero: Soldier Boy.
The season began with one of the most disturbing scenes in the entire series. But it also started with a lot of action and doubts about whether The Boys worked for the good ones. And what? Stormfront is still alive? Even though she wasn’t the most powerful superhero, she was in control of the most powerful. And that was scary. But now that she’s weak, Homelander regains his solo status and prefers to get rid of her. Unfortunately, he’s not only getting more resentful, but he’s also turning into the most psychotic being on the entire planet. Until someone else comes along…
As we remember, The Boys were planning to find whatever killed Soldier Boy to use it against Homelander. And well, after many negotiations and insider info, the group goes to Rusia with a card under their sleeve: temporary V. We finally see what we have been waiting for since the first season: Butcher with powers. He’s ruthless, confused, but focused on getting this weapon to eliminate Homelander. And guess what, they didn’t find a gun. But they found a frozen Soldier Boy that they set free and now was seeking revenge for the past.
So now it was not only Homelander but this legendary supe too. And even though there is some temporary V on The Boys’ side, it lasts for 24 hours and presumably can have counterproductive effects. Starlights still works as a confidential source of information, but not for long. Homelander is finding out about her plans and performances to keep him happy. This keeps adding to his madness.
A new plan has to come up because Soldier Boy is not only on the loose, he has a vital asset: the capacity to disable powers on other supes. This becomes a warning sign for The Boys because not only do they have to tread lightly among both psychos, they have to find out what their next move will be. And they go with trying to form an “alliance” with Soldier Boy. Which ultimately doesn’t work out as they would want to. It even puts them in a more complicated, dangerous, and compromising situation. Because during this time of planning and figuring things out, her former boss Victoria Neumann makes her alliance with Homelander. And now he knows how to get away with his madness by showing the few people that still support him that he’s a dad.
Ryan is not so young anymore, but he’s also not feeling where he belongs now. Even though he has been under the protection of his mom and directly from Grace Mallory, this hasn’t been enough to keep him successfully away from his father. And even to be forgiven by him for his first use of powers. This made Ryan change sides and was truly empowered and allowed him to use his supe presence alongside his dad. Homelander even presents him and killing civilians in the light of day as a new facade to his madness, impacting and nurturing Ryan to what he can do.
What comes next? Hopefully, bigger fights and epic battles with a resolution. After some epic battle scenes between Homelander and Butcher, everyone thought that was going to be it. But it’s still not over. And from the looks of it, two more seasons are on the way until it’s truly over. However, the end is not that far away. Butcher has taken too much temporary V and has allegedly 18 months to live. Starlight has resigned from Vougt and will now officially be part of The Boys. Ryan is now on Homelander’s side and feeling more empowered than ever. I can’t believe there are still two seasons that will bring more questions and angst regarding their fight against Trum… Homelander.
