Call of Duty will break its annual release cycle for the first time in almost 20 years in 2023, postponing the next installment until 2024, with a possible Black Ops installment in the works.
This year, however, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be released, the sequel to the 2019 reboot, which became one of the franchise's cornerstones despite receiving harsh criticism upon its initial launch.
According to VGC, during its Q2 2022 earnings report, Activision stated: “Across the Call of Duty ecosystem, the teams are well positioned to support these launches with substantial live operations, while also continuing development of new premium content planned for 2023 and beyond.”
Activision intends to release premium content instead of a new game next year. That means that the company might plan to release more CoD-related projects on a smaller scale each year. That premium content could be either the standard DLC found in previous Call of Duty games or a standalone zombie-centric installment from Treyarch, which has long been requested.
Some users don't like the micro-transaction model, making their income decline. On Monday, Activision said: “reflecting lower engagement for the Call of Duty franchise, but grew versus the first quarter”. But this could change soon since the company will release two new games.
In addition to the paid premium content, there will be free new features, as there have been in the past, most of which are related to Warzone, meaning that casual users will get their hands on new content as well.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 will come out on 28, 2022, and will be available on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
