The Evolution Championship Series, EVO for short is back after a 2-year absence caused by a series of reasons, one of them the ongoing pandemic which obliged the competitive event into a virtual modality; and several harassment scandals involving Joey "MrWizard" Cuellar.
However, one of the most important fighting game events in the world, returned in a live format last weekend and oh boy, what a return. Taking place in Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, the event enjoyed an incredibly high audience on Twitch.
That is what we call a return!
According to data from Gamesight (via Dexerto), this year's edition of the majestic fighting event had an average audience of 64,799 concurrent viewers across the 3 days of competition. To size up this figure, EVO 2021, which was held under the online modality, had an average of 11,000 concurrent viewers during the entire weekend.
Thus, EVO 2022 was a great success, achieving 6 times more audience than last year's edition. This is based on the data of the entire event. When we take into account only the statistics of the third day, we can observe an increase in the number of average viewers.
Obviously, this was already expected as the finals of the 4 most popular video games in the event took place on the third day of the competition. For example, Street Fighter V had an average audience of 129,815 simultaneous viewers on Twitch and a maximum peak of 156,601, being the largest mark of the entire event.
Take into count that this data comes from a third-party company. At the time of writing, neither Sony nor RTS revealed official statistics.
