Loot boxes are one of the most distinctive and controversial aspects of Overwatch, so the ]confirmation that they are about to disappear from the game in its payment form is quite important.
Overwatch loot boxes will disappear when the game's current event, Overwatch Anniversary Remix Vol. 3, concludes, according to Blizzard Entertainment, which means that when the event ends on August 30, loot boxes will no longer be available for purchase in the game.
It is important to note that this only applies to loot boxes for sale, those purchased with real money. As a result, players will be able to continue earning loot boxes as they play and thus receive more rewards in Overwatch 2.
Blizzard says goodbye to loot boxes in Overwatch 2
Blizzard Entertainment is doing this because Overwatch 2 will replace Overwatch very soon. The monetization model of its predecessor (premium gameplay with loot boxes) will no longer exist in favor of a free-to-play game with Battle Pass and cosmetic item sales.
“Loot Boxes will no longer be available for sale after the end of the Anniversary Remix Vol. 3 event on August 30. However, you will still be able to earn standard loot boxes after the end of the event.” The company stated in their blog post.
All items obtained in Overwatch will remain in your account and available for use in Overwatch 2. This way, the time and money you consumed unlocking cosmetics will not go to waste. The game will launch on October 4, 2022, for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
