Amazon is reportedly going to acquire Electronic Arts, and the announcement might take place later today, the USA Today news website reported unofficially.
''According to GLHF sources, Amazon will announce today that it has put in a formal offer to acquire Electronic Arts (EA), the publisher behind Apex Legends, FIFA, Madden, and more,'' the website reads.
There were no additional details or sources for the reports disclosed. We also don't know how much the deal will cost if it goes through.
Rumors of an EA acquisition have surfaced several times in recent months, with Apple and Disney mentioned as potential buyers.
''This news comes after a range of unprecedented acquisitions and consolidation in the video game space, with the biggest of them being Microsoft’s purchase of Activision Blizzard for $69 billion,'' USA Today follows.
''According to our sources, the announcement will be made later today. We’ve reached out to Amazon and EA for comment and will update you if we hear anything back.''
If Amazon goes ahead with the acquisition, a new large publisher will lose its independence. With the acquisition of Activision Blizzard announced at the beginning of the year and on its way to completion, we should also remember Microsoft's acquisition of Zenimax (Bethesda) in 2020. This means that in less than two years, three video game titans could be swallowed up.
Do you think this acquisition would benefit EA? Let us know in the comments!
