Did you know Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom almost had a 24-karat gold Nintendo Wii? That's right, no kidding, and now that same console was found on eBay moments ago as I was writing this note.
In 2009, a spokesperson for the video game development Big Family Games stated that their new title was a game to play with the whole family and that "the most important in the country was the Royal Family". Hence, they felt the Royal Family needed a game copy. “We thought the Queen wouldn't want to play on an old console, so we made a gold one, especially for her. Hopefully, the whole royal family will enjoy the game, "said the representative. The console was 24-karat gold.
WHAT HAPPENED TO THE QUEEN CONSOLE?
The story goes that THQ, the video game developer, sent the special gift to the queen. Still, neither the guards nor the queen's team believed that it was true that an order from the monarch was placed, so the Palace of Buckingham refused to receive it, and the queen never got it.
After THQ filed for bankruptcy, the 24-karat gold-plated Wii found its way to collector Donny Fillerup eight years later, and now the collector decided to put the console up for sale via eBay at an asking price of $300,000.
“In 2017, I was lucky enough to buy this Wii. However, I kept her very low profile for two years. Then in 2019, the producers of “People Make Games” researched and concluded an interview with me about the golden Wii. The announcement that this famously lost console was found caused a massive reaction in the media,” Fillerup wrote on eBay.
“My family was never very healthy financially, so money was always needed. I never wanted to sell it; however, I was always curious to know how much someone could give for it”, he adds.
According to Donny Fillerup, the lucky winner of the console will also be able to enjoy the documentary on this console that will be announced later this year. “I have documents and emails of his possible authentication. Additionally, the experts at consolevariations.com will issue a separate authentication that includes serial numbers and signatures. All the documentation will be framed”, assures the collector.
How did the queen start with the love for video games? It may be because, in 2008, Kate Middleton gave Prince William a Wii console. Supposedly that's when the queen began her attraction to video games.
Currently, the console is no longer for sale on eBay; the reason is unknown.
