Developer 343 Industries is allegedly planning to change its proprietary Slipspace Engine for Unreal Engine. According to journalist Jeremy Penter, Halo has decided to take this step: “I can only confirm that many sources are saying this and very clear that it’s already been decided and Halo is for sure switching to Unreal.”

I feel like it's time for other switches behind the scenes including people leaving and their past problems.
Unreal is a great choice. https://t.co/8KxMqREWIk
It’s unclear what this decision would mean for the Halo franchise. Suppose 343 decides to switch to Unreal. In that case, it will follow a long line of development road bumps and team departures. It is well-known that Halo Infinite players have been frustrated with the frequency of post-launch updates, with 343 itself acknowledging earlier this year that the game’s community is “out of patience.”
And on top of that, remember that just a few weeks back, studio head Bonnie Ross announced that she’s stepping down after 15 years in charge of the studio. According to VGC, Microsoft had restructured 343’s leadership team. Its former head of production, Pierre Hintze, has taken on the role of studio head. And Bryan Koski, who previously headed up marketing for Halo, is set to become GM of the franchise. In contrast, business, operations, and esports head Elizabeth Van Wyck will oversee business and operations.
This controversial decision could prevent more future bumps, but all in all, it will be a long way before this is forgotten and amended. Also, internal changes could mean that 343 can consider new tech options. But even if they switched to Unreal, it would also take some time before this officially happens.
So the switch to Unreal doesn’t sound that crazy. What do you think?
