Cult filmmaker John Carpenter has spoken out about a prospective adaptation of the well-known horror video game Dead Space after naming his favorite games, which include Fallout 76, Borderland, and Crash Bandicoot.
Interviewed by The AV Club magazine in anticipation of the release of Halloween Ends, the author of The Thing and 1978's Halloween said he favors an adaptation of Dead Space, the famous EA-produced horror video game of which Carpenter is a true fan. ''The only one I can think of, and I’ve mentioned it before, is Dead Space. That would make a real great movie. I could do that.''
The story of the original Dead Space, released on shelves in 2008, centers on an engineer named Isaac Clarke who is sent to repair a ship, the Ishimura, that has communication problems. Upon arrival, however, he will find a terrifying bloodbath. That sure seems like a very Carpenterian subject, indeed, like a mix between The Thing and Ghosts of Mars.
The Ward, starring Amber Heard, was the last movie John Carpenter directed, and it was released in 2010. Since then, the author has primarily served as a producer and soundtrack composer, primarily for David Gordon Green's newest Halloween trilogy but also for the recently released Firestarter remake, which is based on the Stephen King novel.
Carpenter also mentioned how important gaming is to him and how he definitely finds it more enjoyable than making movies. To the director, gaming is relaxing (he probably has not played Valorant, I assume).
