Although it has always been linked inseparably with Microsoft and the Xbox platforms, the Gears of War franchise originally belonged to Epic Games, the company that gave birth to the iconic third-person shooter.
During a recent chat with IGN, Cliff Bleszinski, the former lead designer of the series, returned to talk about Gears of War and how Epic Games, after the release of the third instalment, had run out of creative ideas. The IP was sold to Microsoft in 2014, two years after Cliff Bleszinski departed from Epic Games.
What did the former Lead Designer have to say?
"I honestly think once Lee Perry [Gameplay Designer, Gears of War 2], myself, and Rod Ferguson [Producer, Gears of War] left, I believe that Epic didn't really know what to do with the franchise," he said. Bleszinski believes Epic made the right move since it no longer knew how to run Gears, and the sale replenished the company's coffers for what would become its future investments (including, of course, Fortnite).
Bleszinski also revealed that after the sale of Gears of War, the only person to call him was Phil Spencer, now the leader of Xbox: ''As much as I loved Tim and Mark [Rein, VP of Epic Games] and we're still in touch, but when the IP was sold to Microsoft the only phone call I got was from Phil Spencer. Right? And that's Phil. Phil is, as they say, a gentleman and a scholar.''

As you may know, The Coalition now runs the series, which made the fourth and fifth instalments. A job announcement seems to confirm that Gears 6 will happen, and Microsoft's recent moves suggest that the company plans to extend the Gears brand beyond video game boundaries.
