Activision-Blizzard has announced that several of its most popular titles will no longer be available in China starting in January. Apparently, the publisher has not found common ground with NetEase to extend the agreement that allowed the games to remain in the Asian territory.
Chinese users are not happy about this
According to Reuters, NetEase shares closed down 9% in Hong Kong after Blizzard said it could not reach an agreement with the Hangzhou-based company that was consistent with the California-based company's "operating principles and commitments to players and employees." Chinese users were shocked by the news, as many claim to have played some Blizzard productions for over a decade.
Blizzard said sales would be in the next few days and that players would receive further details. Games suspended by midnight on January 24 include World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, Warcraft III: Reforged, Overwatch 2, the StarCraft series, Diablo III and Heroes of the Storm. Diablo Immortal, which was more recently released and developed in collaboration between NetEase and Blizzard, is instead covered by a separate long-term agreement, which will allow its service to continue to be available in China.
