Mark Zuckerberg's position as CEO of Meta will conclude in 2023. This is according to a story by The Leak, which cites an internal source and indicates that the executive has decided to stand down. The material is still scant and should be treated cautiously, but if confirmed, it would be one of the year's biggest surprises.
The aforementioned story does not provide much more information on the subject, though it does state that Mark Zuckerberg's alleged departure would not affect the Metaverse's goals.
Why would Mark step down?
According to the report, "it's very possibly Zuckerberg's attempt at holding himself accountable for Metaverse's underwhelming performance – which has seen its stock drop over 70% from its peak." This means that Zuck's reported resignation comes when the Menlo Park firm is under intense scrutiny for its approach to virtual life.
"Zuckerberg already has plans to let go of thousands of employees. This is in line with a general trend in the tech industry and with investor worries about headcount costs, which were outlined in the open letter by Altimeter Capital."

Although Zuckerberg has faced similar challenges in the past, Metaverse's overestimation of public interest in virtual escapism may be the culmination of his long reign.
