With the purchase of Activision Blizzard, what the CMA is looking for is that there are no monopoly practices in the industry. Now, speaking precisely on that issue, the CMA has begun a new investigation to analyze Apple and Google in mobile devices and cloud gaming.
Through a statement, the CMA assured that both companies have a "duopoly" and they "exercise absolute control" in aspects such as operating systems, application stores, and mobile browsers.
The investigation becomes relevant since they are indirectly linked to Microsoft's plans to expand to mobile once it completes the purchase of Activision Blizzard.
APPLE AND GOOGLE ARE ALSO UNDER INVESTIGATION BY CMA
To justify its research, the CMA argues that 97% of mobile Internet searches are done through an Apple or Google browser. In addition, both companies have important businesses thanks to their respective app stores and video game projects involving the use of the cloud.
The authorities believe that its dominance in the field of browsers may impact the user experience of any type of restriction.
For this reason, they will analyze the dominance of companies in that market and the cloud gaming restrictions that Apple places on the App Store. The CMA thinks its operations may be "hurting business, holding back innovation, and adding unnecessary costs."
Its primary sources are complaints from developers who disagree with specific policies and restrictions when launching a mobile app or game.
“Apple and Google have argued that restrictions are needed to protect users. The CMA's market research will consider these concerns and whether new rules are needed to achieve better results. Market research can lead to changes in business behavior and restrictions, which improves competition and leads to more choice for consumers and better quality products,” the CMA said.
