During a lengthy interview with IGN, Hideo Kojima discussed the new game in collaboration with Xbox, but he also returned to talk about the Death Stranding sequel announced at The Game Awards 2022.
As he had already anticipated at Geoff Keighley's event, the plot of DS2 was rewritten after the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic and the world change we necessarily had to go through. Creatively, Kojima was greatly affected by the events and felt the need to change the face of the project.
Everything had to change
"It was the same with 9/11. Fiction changes when something that big happens. When something takes place that nobody thought was possible, works of fiction written before it becomes less effective as entertainment, that's why I rewrote DS2 from its themes up as well. You can't pretend that something this big never happened,'' Kojima stated.
Although video games are based on fictional characters not necessarily related to our reality, it is the players themselves who faced the pandemic: a script made before that experience would never have had the same impact, be it a fantasy or science fiction story," the Metal Gear Solid father said.
Covid-19 has slowed down work on several creative projects, including a short film that Kojima Productions was working on and that, according to current plans, is set to go unreleased.
"There was even talk of a short film, but that got shelved due to Covid. It was a screenplay I wrote that we planned to put out as a video. I had been thinking of making this as a short film as a first dip into Hollywood, and the script still exists, but we don't intend on making it anymore, at least right now."
In case you missed it: From creators of Fable, Tin Hearts is announced to launch on Nintendo Switch.
The visionary game director also talked about Kojima Productions' first steps, Death Stranding, and the difficulties he had to overcome to re-emerge within the video game industry after parting ways with Konami.
