The rise of mobile gaming in recent years has highlighted the willingness of gamers to move to a more "everyday" peripheral that is easily accessible and always at hand. Nevertheless, the latest market data suggest that mobile gaming declined in 2022, the first after years of growth.
The numbers went down
According to data proposed by FairBettingSites and Newzoo, this year's revenue is expected to be $92.2 billion, 6.4 percent less than in 2021. This decline in revenue is accompanied by their overall decline for the video game market, at $184.4 billion or 4.3 percent less than last year, aided by a lower success of console games, to date the second largest segment of the industry. Much lower was the decline for PC games, at 1.8 percent.
In addition to reducing total revenue, mobile games also experienced the first-ever decline in users: we are talking about as many as 105 million fewer players, mainly in China.
In case you missed it: Kojima and the effects of the pandemic: DS2's rewritten plot.
However, this downsizing trend is not the first sign of a future collapse: despite the harmful data, mobile games still hold the largest share of global revenues, so it is not all bad news after all.
