When it comes to fighting games, Super Smash Bros., the Nintendo title, takes an important place among the best games of its genre. Many projects have tried to emulate its concept, but the reality is that only some have managed to compete directly against Nintendo's proposal.
Recently, developer Luke Muscat revealed that a studio had in mind a game that followed the Super Smash Bros. formula but pitted Marvel's most iconic superheroes against each other in platform combat. However, the project failed to come to fruition and was ultimately made into a Nintendo DS game that was not well received.
MARVEL WANTED TO HAVE THEIR SUPER SMASH BROS.
Given proposals like PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale and more recent games like MultiVersus and Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, it's not a crazy idea to think of a similar game with Marvel characters. This almost came true with Super Hero Squad, a Nintendo DS game from THQ and Halfbrick.
Initially, the developers wanted the title to offer combat in the purest Super Smash Bros. style, but with Marvel characters such as Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and many other iconic superheroes of the company.
However, Muscat reveals that this concept was canceled mid-development. This is because Halfbrick realized that THQ and Marvel wanted a more attached game to beat 'em up and along the lines of some older X-Men games.
Then, he had to scrap the idea of making a Marvel Super Smash Bros., recover some of the work he already had, and adjust to the company's requirements. This is how Marvel Super Hero Squad for Nintendo DS was born.
