With 2022 gone to the archives, it is time to make estimates and reports on what has happened commercially in the last 12 months in the video game sphere. We discovered that Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console of 2022 globally; meanwhile, more accurate numbers come in for the UK.
On the software side, without any major surprises, FIFA 23 emerges as the best-selling game of the year, overtaking competition from other popular productions such as Call of Duty Modern Warfare II, Elden Ring, and GTA V.
The first place is firmly in the hands of FIFA 23
The soccer sportsman from Electronic Arts gets the first position even when calculating digital-only or retail-only distribution, and compared to FIFA 22, saw its sales grow by 4%. Much more substantial in each case is the increase of the runner-up, COD Modern Warfare II, with sales up 67% over what COD Vanguard recorded a year earlier.
On the hardware side, the Switch surpasses the PS5 at the last moment as the best-selling console of 2022 in the UK, but the Big N's hybrid platform still recorded a drop of nearly 28% compared to the numbers achieved in 2021. Overall, the console market is down 29% from the previous 12 months, with all major platforms underperforming relative to 2021.
