Artificial intelligence is advancing by leaps and bounds and game creators want to take full advantage of it. NetEase revealed that it will implement ChatGPT's potential to revolutionize the way non-playable characters (NPCs) work in one of its upcoming games.
Daniel Ahmad, director of research and information at Niko Partners, reported that the Chinese company will use OpenAI's artificial intelligence in its mobile MMO Justice Online Mobile. Its goal is that players will be able to interact with AI-powered NPCs and this will have an impact on the gameplay experience.
In case you don't know, ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence developed by OpenAI that can interact with users and answer all kinds of questions through a chat. Its arrival in Internet browsers is currently in the testing phase and its application in other sectors is imminent.
According to Ahmad, one of NetEase's goals is for ChatGPT to enhance NPC dialogues to provide more dynamic, expressive conversations with a higher level of emotionality and impact. This would make NPCs more responsive to player actions, regardless of whether interacting via text or voice.
With Generative AI being all over the headlines these days, NetEase says it'll launch launch the first game version of ChatGPT in Justice Online Mobile, its upcoming MMO title.

It'll allow players to chat with NPCs and have them react in unique ways that impact the game. pic.twitter.com/JBiFy3J5dV
The analyst gives several examples of the application of AI: a player tells an NPC that his house is on fire and then the character reacts and does something to prevent it. He also states that the player could break a relationship between 2 NPCs depending on their interactions.
Ahmad believes this is just the beginning of implementing AI tools like ChatGPT in video games. He states that there are also plans to use the technology to create content as such, power character customization, and more.
They plan to scale the use of AI to support task generation, content creation, character customization and more.

Only 1 demo so far, so unclear how in depth it is or if it's just a marketing gimmick for now.
Poses questions about how AI will impact VA, content creation etc...

Ahmad does not rule out that it is also a simple marketing strategy to attract attention and that the implementation may not be as fruitful as expected. We will have to wait to know the results and see what other studios are encouraged to do so. But we can consider this the beginning of something that will possibly be implemented in future AAA games.
