With thousands of daily players, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive remains Steam's most popular video game. Despite its impressive success, players are beginning to wonder when a sequel will arrive. While what's in store for the multiplayer franchise is a mystery, new clues suggest that a new installment is on the way.
Earlier this week, Gabe Follower, a well-known content creator, and leaker specializing in Valve's FPS discovered that a recent NVIDIA update added new drivers that support 2 unknown applications: csgo2.exe and cs.exe.
Something weird just happened. Latest NVIDIA drivers introduced support for unknown app executables called "csgos2.exe" and "cs2.exe". Why project is called Counter-Strike 2 and what are you cooking @csgo? https://t.co/U9YKlAjwgy pic.twitter.com/PU8Op9uGLq

While the previous finding was more than enough to create a wave of speculation on social networks, now journalist Richard Lewis published an article in which he points out that, according to anonymous sources, a new Counter-Strike game is in development and very close to releasing its first beta.
According to alleged sources familiar with the project, Valve has been working on a new version of the FPS, tentatively titled Counter-Strike 2, for quite some time. Richard Lewis noted in his report that a Beta test will take place in late March or early April, which means that the official announcement could be very close in case this information is correct.
According to the journalist's sources, the video game is close to debuting and is the company's priority. Also, it seems that groups of professional players were already able to play in a private test that took place in Seattle.
Details are scarce, of course, but preliminary reports indicate that the aforementioned Counter-Strike 2 uses the Source 2 graphics engine, which will allow for "improving the optimization and graphical fidelity of the game." Also, there is talk of revamped matchmaking. "The big priority is getting this out and then polishing it, fixing any bugs, and bringing it up to the level people expect from CS," the sources indicated.
Shortly after these reports, content creator Gabe Follower joined the conversation and indicated that he had reliable information suggesting that the new installment of the multiplayer franchise is real and has been in testing since late last year.
Rumor: I've got fairly reliable information that Valve has been testing CS:GO on Source 2 with the help of third-party QA companies in the US and EU since at least early December. I can't confirm this 100%, but it's decent enough to share.

At the time of writing, this information has not been confirmed by Valve. Thus, we recommend waiting until an official statement appears to avoid disappointment. We have seen many different rumors pop up in the gaming community and not all of them turn out to be true, so patience will always be the key to these situations.
