Just as we reported at the end of last week, SEGA Sammy Holdings, better known simply as SEGA, has reached an agreement to acquire Rovio. With this move, the home of Sonic the Hedgehog will become the new owner of Angry Birds.
In a statement, SEGA announced that it has come to an agreement with the management of Rovio Entertainment. As a result, the company, its development teams, and its intellectual properties (including Angry Birds) will become part of SEGA in exchange for approximately $775 million ($10.16 USD per share).
SEGA clarifies that the agreement is a friendly acquisition since Rovio's executives view the merger positively and approved it before SEGA reached an agreement with investors to acquire the shares. Additionally, the company mentions that it expects to close the deal before the second quarter of the fiscal year 2024/3 once it has been approved by regulatory bodies.
Why did SEGA buy Rovio?
The reason why SEGA made the decision to buy Rovio was because it considers it to be one of the leading mobile gaming companies, especially due to the creation and development of Angry Birds. Thus, SEGA acquired Rovio to be able to grow in the mobile world.
SEGA points out that they will take advantage of Rovio's knowledge and experience in the world of mobile games and projects as services. With this, they hope to expand their franchises satisfactorily on iOS and Android, platforms on which they see great potential due to the enormous number of users they have.
"SEGA aims to accelerate its growth in the global video game market and increase its corporate value by generating synergies between SEGA's existing businesses and Rovio's strengths, including its global IPs and live mobile game development capabilities," explained SEGA.
