Discord is an incredibly popular app in gaming spaces, and more and more people are using it as their favorite communication service. That being said, Discord's popularity does not prevent it from angering its community, as it recently did with an action related to usernames.
Through a post on its website, Discord announced that it is preparing a very important change. It turns out that its username system will be modified to make it "easier to connect with your friends."
If you are a Discord user, you know that, until now, each username has an attached number called a discriminator. This means that several people can have the same username, with the last numbers being the differentiator. Thus, someone could be named LevelUp#0084 and another user have the name LevelUp#8932.
Simple, right? Additionally, this prevented people from missing out on the username they wanted just because someone already took it. That being said, Discord feels that this system can also lead to problems, so it will remove it.
Therefore, Discord will implement a system that eliminates the user system with differentiators, for a new username without numbers. Therefore, all Discord users will have to choose a new username at some point.
According to Discord, the new usernames will be available at some point in the next few weeks, so you can start choosing yours soon. It should be noted that new names are in lowercase, with alphanumeric characters, and limited to certain special characters. The goal is to make it easier to remember, read, write, and share.
An important point is that your display name (i.e., the one that appears in servers and chats with friends) will not change. Therefore, it can still be "almost anything" as long as it complies with Discord's community guidelines.
Unfortunately for Discord, the change did not resonate positively with the community. On social media, they believe it is a "stupid" adjustment that goes against some of the features that make Discord special.
Discord literally cant stop being stupid.

This is ONE of the good things they had. The internet is huge by now, being the first to get a certain username is impossible. I am tired of "Gumshoe is already taken. Here are some siggestions Gumshoe_10000, GumshoeTwo, G.Shoe" https://t.co/mSjI83rSrZ
why are all the things i use for social media or otherwise getting stupid features or getting destroyed these days. i really hate this discord username change and hope it gets reverted

I hope @discord understand just how stupid a “unique” username system is… especially considering the system they have now works far better

stupid imo. the reason they're doing this is allegedly bc ppl keep typing numbers wrong or whatever but man

like my discord is private for a reason! it's my personal chat space! so now i either take my username and ppl can Find Me or i run the risk of someone impersonating me https://t.co/3mMz6xJvTB
What do you think about this change? Do you think it's a real mistake or rather a minor inconvenience? Let us know in the comments.
