Certainly, Hogwarts Legacy had a very complicated launch. Despite being one of the most anticipated titles of the year, it had to deal with the controversy surrounding J.K. Rowling, the original author of the Harry Potter books. Although it was in the eye of the storm for months, it had an exceptional performance.
In just 2 weeks, Warner Bros. Games and Avalanche Software's open-world title sold 12 million units and generated over $850 million in revenue. According to reports, it performed 256% better than expected commercially and even broke audience records on Twitch.
Now, Warner Bros. Discovery has provided updated figures on the sales and earnings of this title in the latest financial report, which covers the company's first quarter (until March 31). Without a doubt, we are facing one of the most successful releases of recent years.
Hogwarts Legacy is unstoppable and has already sold millions of copies
In the earnings report, the company confirmed that the video game has already shipped 15 million copies worldwide and had revenues of over $1 billion to date. Additionally, it emphasizes that it is WB Games' most successful launch in history and the best-selling title of 2023 so far.
Hogwarts Legacy debuted in February for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. After suffering a couple of delays, the versions for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are now available. The port for Nintendo Switch will arrive on july 25.
Although the versions for Sony and Microsoft's older generation consoles are important for the future of the fantasy game, JB Perrette, Warner Bros.' Global Streaming and Gaming General Manager, emphasized that they have higher hopes for the hybrid platform port of Nintendo.
This week, Avalanche Software released a massive patch this week that corrected over 500 errors, added a new cosmetic item for Professor Ronen and incorporated an arachnophobia mode, which makes the game's spiders less terrifying.
