During a earnings call, David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, talked about the great success of Hogwarts Legacy and its plans to further strengthen its video game strategy. Interestingly, he hinted at a possible Superman game.
Fans have been asking for a new superhero game for years, but no title has come to fruition. Now that DC entered a new phase and games will be an important part of its universe, many gamers are hoping that the project will become a reality. Especially after Zaslav's words.
Is a Superman game on its way?
Zaslav highlighted the current strength of its video game business thanks to its 11 studios and talented developers. He stated that one of their strengths undoubtedly is that they have big-name franchises in their hands and with them they can make very attractive games.
"We may be the only media company that owns--whether it be the DC universe, Harry Potter, all the content that we own, Game of Thrones, that's for us to deploy. I think that's particularly important strategically." said the executive.
He went on to talk about the success of Hogwarts Legacy, which allows players to enter a fabulous world and have an immersive experience. He hinted that something similar will happen in the future with Superman and his world.
"When we launch a product on Max or HBO, and when we have a game, that game belongs to us, but now there's this in-betweener. It may be in the next couple of years that we launch a Superman movie and...people spend more time and there's more economics of people just hanging out in the Superman world and universe.
"The fact that we own all of that is something that I think is going to be really important as we look forward--as technology develops, and given the amount of time that people spend on gaming, we don't want to be in the motion picture and longform storytelling business and have somebody else in the business of hanging out in those worlds. Those worlds are going to be quite profitable in the years ahead." the executive added.
While nothing is confirmed for now, we know that James Gunn is already preparing the new superhero movie. It would not be unreasonable to think that Warner Bros. Discovery will take advantage of the moment to offer a Superman game, but it would be best to wait for more information on the matter.
