For many years, most video game adaptations in film and television were a complete disaster. Fortunately, today the landscape is much more favorable for this kind of production. With this in mind, it seems that SEGA is willing to undertake more multimedia projects based on its franchises.
During a Q&A session that took place after the publication of the annual earnings report, the CEO Haruki Satomi and CFO Koichi Fukazawa were asked about the possibility of seeing feature films based on other franchises of the Japanese company. Fortunately, the response will excite many fans.
MORE SEGA IP COULD HAVE MOVIES IN THE FUTURE
Specifically, SEGA agreed with the possibility of making feature films of its other franchises if “the opportunity arises." Furthermore, it indicated that it would like game and multimedia project releases to coincide, as it presents benefits from a marketing and brand reach perspective.
"If we can match the timing of game launches to the release of movies, it would be extremely effective from a marketing perspective and there are also significant benefits, such as increasing awareness of our IP and increasing the number of touch points for customers, as we achieved with the Sonic movie," the company said in an english transcript of the conference.
Certainly, SEGA's stance is to be expected. At the end of the day, the films featuring the blue hedgehog were a resounding success at the box office and were well-received by fans.
Sonic the Hedgehog grossed nearly $320 million during its theatrical run in 2020, while its sequel surpassed $405 million at the box office following its release in 2022. A series starring Knuckles has already begun production, and the third movie will arrive in theaters at the end of next year.
With the executives' statements on the table, fans are already dreaming of seeing new films from Yakuza, Bayonetta, Virtua Fighter, and more.
But tell us, which SEGA franchise do you think should have a film adaptation? Let us know in the comments.
