It seems that the use of artificial intelligence tools on a larger scale for video game development is inevitable, and in the coming years, various projects could make them the centerpiece of their progress. This weekend, Nvidia gave a glimpse of what the future of gaming could look like, where we would not only talk about creative processes but also about forms of interaction between the player and the characters beyond buttons.
NVIDIA PRESENTS ACE, AI TECHNOLOGY FOR NPC DEVELOPMENT IN VIDEO GAMES
During its presentation at the Computex 2023 event held in Taipei, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang presented NVIDIA Avatar Cloud Engine (ACE) for Games, technology that combines artificial intelligence with cloud expertise for the development and gaming experience. According to the company, Nvidia ACE allows NPCs to have animations, voice, conversation, and forms of interaction like never before seen, making it possible for these characters to respond and act according to what the player asks, like a conversation between two or more people, leaving behind the era of dialog box interfaces.

During the presentation, an example of Nvidia ACE in action was revealed, showing an NPC responding to a user's questions. According to the company, this technology is immediately integrated into its portfolio of game development tools such as NeMo, Riva, and Omniverse Audio2Face, allowing for the creation of NPCs with more realistic responses, gestures, and attitudes. Furthermore, work in this area would be reduced as it would be powered by the cloud, so large game scripts with branching possibilities like Mass Effect could see a new era.
Nvidia noted that this concept of video game development is known as generative AI and revealed that GSC Game World, developers of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, are using these tools for the NPCs in this highly anticipated title.
