The end of an era! This year, Microsoft announced that it will end support and direct relationship with Cortana, its virtual assistant, on Windows 10 and 11. This is just one step towards artificial intelligence where the company is already at the forefront.
CORTANA WILL SAY GOODBYE TO WINDOWS 10 AND 11 THIS YEAR
In a statement on its official support site, Microsoft announced that it will end support for the Cortana virtual assistant application in Windows 10 and Windows 11 later this year. While this is not the definitive end of this female avatar that accompanied the user experience for a decade (as it will still be available in other applications), its departure from the operating system signals an important change.
Regarding this, Microsoft states: "We are making some changes to Windows that will affect Cortana app users. Starting in late 2023, we will no longer support Cortana in Windows as a standalone app. This change only affects Cortana in Windows, and your productivity assistant, Cortana, will still be available in Outlook Mobile, Teams Mobile, Microsoft Teams Display, and Microsoft Teams Rooms. We know this change may affect some of the ways you work in Windows, so we want to help you smoothly transition to new options. Instead of clicking on the Cortana icon and starting up the app to use voice, you can now use voice and meet your productivity needs through different tools."
This announcement comes days after Microsoft announced Windows Copilot, its AI tool that will accompany the user experience in the operating system. The company has advanced in the race for this technology and today is ahead of its biggest competitor, Google.
Cortana was introduced as an assistance application in 2014, originating from the synthetic intelligence we knew in Halo. At that time, Microsoft was trying to position itself in the sector by offering an interactive experience through voice commands that would compete with Amazon's Alexa, but especially with Apple's Siri, which had already shaken up the industry three years earlier.
Thus, there are a few months left to experience Cortana support in Windows 10 and 11 before transitioning to Windows Copilot in the era of AI.
