For some time now, it has been rumored that Apple is interested in venturing into the world of augmented reality and virtual reality. At WWDC 2023, this was confirmed with the announcement of Apple Vision Pro, a new augmented reality device.
During the presentation of Apple Vision Pro, Tim Cook made it clear that they aim for it to be a revolution, offering a leap similar to what Mac and Apple releases did for computing and mobile technology, respectively. However, they also want the leap of Apple Vision Pro to be reflected in space computing.
So what exactly is Apple Vision Pro? It is an augmented reality device that you wear on your head like VR glasses, similar to Meta Quest or PlayStation VR2. What makes it interesting is that you can see the real world while the glasses allow you to interact with different applications using eye, voice, and hand input methods.
One feature that will surely catch many people's attention is that Apple Vision Pro allows you to display multiple screens or even just one screen as big as a cinema screen. Additionally, you can connect Apple Vision Pro to a MacBook for multiple monitors and more comfortable work (or playing video games like Death Stranding Director's Cut on ultrawide or a giant screen).
While Apple Vision Pro is designed to be used as an augmented reality device, it also has virtual reality elements. For example, when displaying a cinema screen, you can ask the device to present a different environment than the room (or plane) you are in, such as a lake, mountain, or movie theater. This creates a fully immersive experience that makes you feel like you are in another place.
But what about video games? Apple confirmed that Apple Vision Pro will be compatible with over 100 games from Apple Arcade, including NBA 2K. These games will run natively on the device and can be enjoyed on its virtual screens. It's worth mentioning that you can connect controllers like DualSense to enjoy these titles.
The entertainment offering of Apple Vision Pro doesn't end there. Disney has been closely working to make Disney+ and character content available on this augmented reality device. One of the ways it will be used is in immersive experiences and additional information for live sports broadcasts from ESPN.
If you're wondering, Apple Vision Pro is equipped with an Apple M2 chip that runs in parallel with the new chip: Apple R1. This processor is dedicated to receiving and managing sensor information to ensure that the experience is eight times faster than blinking. According to Apple, this leads to natural experiences.
When will Apple Vision Pro be released and how much will it cost? According to the official announcement, Apple Vision Pro will be sold for $3,499 USD. The device will go on sale in early 2024, and more news is expected to be announced in the coming months.
