Since its release in December 2011, BioWare has been working tirelessly on Star Wars: The Old Republic, an MMO set in the Star Wars universe. This project has a lot of fans who love it, but the studio is ready for other things, which is why they will abandon it. Fortunately, that doesn't mean the end of Star Wars: The Old Republic.
According to IGN sources, Electronic Arts made the decision to free BioWare from its responsibilities with Star Wars: The Old Republic so that the studio known for its acclaimed RPGs can devote more time to developing new Dragon Age and Mass Effect games.
Fortunately, Star Wars: The Old Republic remains a profitable project for Electronic Arts. That's why its development won't be canceled, and it will only change hands. Apparently, EA is negotiating with Broadsword Online Games to take over the MMORPG. In fact, it is said that they have already signed a letter of intent to finalize the agreement this month.
In case you don't know, Broadsword Online Games is a game development studio with a lot of experience in RPGs. Currently, it is responsible for Ultima Online and Dark Age of Camelot. In addition, its head is Rob Denton, who was vice president of BioWare and worked on the creation of Star Wars: The Old Republic.
It should be noted that currently there are between 70 and 80 people on the team working on Star Wars: The Old Republic at BioWare. More than half of them are expected to continue working on the game, but now as part of Broadsword. The rest will have the opportunity to find another position within Electronic Arts, but there will also be layoffs.
