For better or worse, content creators are figures with significant influence. Kai Cenat, one of the most popular Twitch streamers, discovered in the worst way the reach and media power he possesses. Now, he could face very serious legal problems after his initiative got out of hand.
On August 4th, the influencer organized a gathering to give away a PlayStation 5 in Union Square Park, one of the most recognized parks in New York. Although it seems he had good intentions, the situation quickly spiraled out of control and chaos ensued when thousands of people, leading to the mobilization of law enforcement.
According to reports, authorities arrested many individuals following the riots, including Kai Cenat. Now, nearly a week after the incident, the content creator broke his silence, expressed his disappointment in the people who acted poorly, and discussed the legal issues he is facing.

In a live stream, the Twitch streamer, who currently has over 6.5 million followers on the platform, stated that his intention was never to cause chaos and emphasized that all he wanted to do was give back to his community with a gifted PlayStation 5.
“That's not cool. None of that is cool. I'm beyond disappointed in the things that went on on Friday. And I want people to know that none of that was my intention. I had good intentions for this whole thing (...) I don't condone any of the things that went on that day. None of that is cool. I'm seeing random videos of people getting started on people's cars, and I'm asking myself while I'm watching the video, 'Why?'”, said the content creator.
Kai Cenat addressed the reports and confirmed that he is indeed facing multiple charges. He informed his community that he will step back from live streams for a while as he deals with this situation.
“I'm gonna have to chill for a little bit due to the fact that, one, I got court dates that I gotta appear to. My first court date is August 16, that's my first court date. I have things that I actually have to handle ... y'all not going to be seeing me for a little bit”, said Kai Cenat.
In statements to PC Gamer, a representative from the Office of the Deputy Commissioner of Public Information of the City of New York confirmed that Kai Cenat faces charges of incitement, unlawful assembly, and rioting. The first two are misdemeanors, while the third is a Class E felony carrying penalties of up to 4 years in prison and a fine of $5,000 USD.
Despite his PS5 giveaway getting out of control, it appears that the Twitch streamer intends to repeat it on another occasion. However, he assures that if he does so, he will reach out to the appropriate individuals to do it correctly. Ultimately, he acknowledges that this situation made him realize the influence and power he holds over people.
