It was to be expected that Baldur's Gate 3 would have a strong start; however, what it achieved in its first week went beyond the expectations of both developers and the community. Although it's already a success, players are now coming together in an attempt to make history.
In early August, the RPG by Larian Studios officially debuted on PC after a long period of early access availability. Upon its release, it made a firm stand and exceeded the concurrent player records of games like Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Resident Evil 4 Remake.
Over the weekend, the role-playing video game became one of the most popular games in Steam's history, surpassing the 800,000 concurrent user mark. Although it fell short and was unable to surpass the peak of Hogwarts Legacy, the community aims to rectify that situation.
PLAYERS WANT BALDUR'S GATE 3 TO MAKE HISTORY ON STEAM
Through a reddit post, user L1teEmUp called upon the community. Specifically, urged fans who have purchased the game or plan to do so to gather and surpass the 1,000,000 concurrent player on Steam. The event is scheduled for Saturday, August 12th, at 7:00 pm PST.
At the time of writing, the post has garnered over 700 upvotes. In the comment section, users expressed their support for the cause. Some even jokingly mentioned that they would be playing anyway. "I will do my part," one fan commented. "Usually the first weekend after launch is the strongest and then it declines, so it would be crazy if the top number from post launch hype can be beaten. I'd for sure be happy to see that happen", another user stated.
While the enthusiasm is there, a segment of the community believes that surpassing that milestone is unlikely. Nonetheless, they assert that Baldur's Gate 3 is already a success. At the time of writing this article, it has 648,453 concurrent users.
If Baldur's Gate 3 surpasses the 1,000,000 concurrent user mark on Steam, it will surpass ELDEN RING, New World and Hogwarts Legacy. Its next target would be Cyberpunk 2077, which holds a record of 1,054,388 concurrent players. However, it will have quite a way to go if it wishes to surpass the peak of 3,257,248 achieved by PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS in its prime.
