Since its official release in early August, Baldur's Gate 3 has been the subject of much positive discussion. Despite belonging to a niche genre, it immediately became one of the major releases of 2023. Everything points to its success, and a new report allows us to gauge its popularity.
The acclaimed RPG by Larian Studios made a strong impact on its launch and surpassed the barrier of 800,000 simultaneous players on Steam. Additionally, it received praise from both specialized critics and gamers, allowing it to become one of the highest-rated games in history.
Naturally, it's easy to assume that this role-playing proposition is performing well commercially. Although the studio hasn't yet shared specific unit sales figures, a new report suggests that it is indeed performing outstandingly in stores.
Baldur's Gate 3 Dominates in a Big Way
According to a report from the Belgian Embassy in China, Baldur's Gate 3 has already surpassed the 5 million units sold mark on Steam. This figure also includes the 2.5 million copies sold during the early access period, indicating that the title managed to sell around 2.7 million copies since its August release. It seems that GOG data is not included.
Undoubtedly, this is an impressive achievement, especially when considering that this experience is a highly robust and extensive role-playing game. The embassy's report also highlights other accomplishments. For instance, it points out the record number of concurrent users on Steam and the extremely positive reviews.
"Let's take a look at the numbers as of August 16, when this article was written. The game sold 5.2 million copies on the PC Steam platform, with over 870,000 users online simultaneously and a positive rating of 94.3%. On Metacritic, a review aggregation site, Baldur's Gate 3 is the eighth highest-rated game of all time," reads the report.
The sales of this title might exponentially increase in early September when it becomes available on PlayStation 5.
Undoubtedly, the success of this proposition serves as a lesson for the gaming industry. Even Swen Vincke, founder and CEO of Larian Studios, had to respond to criticism about the game's perfection, as some have pointed out that the project puts pressure on developers of other AAA titles.
But tell us, have you given this RPG experience a chance? What did you think? Let us hear from you in the comments.
