Similar to movies, TV shows, music, books, and any other form of entertainment, video games are products of their time and context. Thus, it's normal for certain content to be considered offensive or outdated in the future. It appears that the original Metal Gear Solid games feature themes that some people might find outdated.
A few months ago, Konami announced the Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1, a collection that includes the 3 main entries along with several additional titles. Undoubtedly, this franchise is known for its diverse topics, wild moments, and memorable characters.
It seems that the Japanese company acknowledges that some individuals might find the content of these classic games offensive. This, at least, is suggested by a warning.
"Discretion is advised": Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 contains outdated content, according to Konami
While the collection is set to debut in mid-October, some media outlets have already had the chance to try it out. The GamesRadar+ website reports that there is a notice at the beginning of the game, warning players that the games touch on themes that may be considered outdated. However, it's mentioned that there were no modifications made to preserve the original "creator's" vision, referring to Hideo Kojima.
"This game contains expressions and themes that may be considered outdated; however, these elements have been included without alteration to preserve the historical context in which they were created and the original vision of the creator. Player discretion is advised," reads the notice.
Such messages are quite common in retro movie or TV show broadcasts that, due to their historical context, handle certain topics carelessly or present stereotypes that could be considered racist, sexist, discriminatory, etc.
Judging by this disclaimer, it seems that Konami believes that certain sections of the classic Metal Gear Solid games might make some members of the community uncomfortable. Certainly, Hideo Kojima's franchise is irreverent and includes some elements that, to a certain extent, could be viewed as controversial in the light of modernity, from the designs of some female characters to political themes.
But tell us, do you think Konami is exaggerating? Do you believe that some themes, designs, or expressions in the original games have aged poorly? Share your thoughts in the comments.
Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 will be available for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch starting from October 24.
