Larian Studios has faced some challenges in bringing Baldur's Gate 3 to Xbox, as the split-screen feature of the game has posed a technological challenge difficult to overcome on the Xbox Series S. Due to this and the parity that Xbox demands for releases on its consoles, the RPG was initially scheduled to arrive on Xbox Series X|S until 2024.
Fortunately, the studio and Xbox have reached an agreement for the title to be released as soon as possible on these systems. Thanks to this, Baldur's Gate 3 will come to Xbox at some point this year. However, the port for Xbox Series S will not offer all the content that the rest of the versions will.
Baldur's Gate 3 will debut on Xbox, but in Series S it won't have an appealing feature
Larian confirmed that they met with Phil Spencer to discuss the release of Baldur's Gate 3 on Xbox. They came to the conclusion that it's best to launch the title as soon as possible on Xbox Series X|S, even if that means making some sacrifices on the less powerful console.
Swen Johan Vincke, a developer from the studio, explained that the game will come with all the content, features, and improvements to Xbox Series X. However, the version for Xbox Series S will lack the split-screen cooperative mode, which has been the main hurdle in getting the game ready.
Thus, Xbox decided to waive the parity between Xbox Series X|S and allowed Larian to release the game with fewer features. Despite being potentially disappointing news for some, Larian stated that the version for Xbox Series S will have cross-progression between Steam and Xbox Series X.
This way, players will be able to resume their progress if they decide to enjoy the RPG on another platform where split-screen cooperative play is available.
