Naked Rain and NetEase Games revealed this week Project Mugen, an open-world RPG in development for consoles, PC and mobile devices. The project caught the attention of gamers for its anime aesthetic, urban setting and the scale of its world.
Project Mugen also set off alarm bells for Spider-Man fans, who believe that the Chinese studios copied one of the best mechanics from Insomniac Games' games. Specifically, they are referring to the cross movement and swinging system used in PlayStation titles.
Project Mugen is accused of copying Marvel's Spider-Man
Players will be able to explore a huge city with a great level of freedom in Project Mugen. To do this they will make their character swing through the air and run through the buildings in a very dynamic way.
This detail did not go unnoticed by the community, who immediately compared it to the moves Spider-Man does in Insomniac Games' games. Players consider the maneuvers to be too similar, so they pointed to Project Mugen for alleged plagiarism.
There are even people who believe that Project Mugen looks like a mod for Marvel's Spider-Man that simply changes the arachnid to an anime-style character. Some Insomniac Games fans asked Naked Rain for an explanation for the similar animations, but have yet to get a response.
On the other hand, NetEase Games hasn't commented on the matter either, so it's unclear what will happen. The controversy could affect Project Mugen, but at the same time it has made more players see it and know its proposal. Below you can watch a video showing the RPG's animations:
