Panos Panay, Microsoft's Chief Product Officer and one of the primary figures responsible for the Windows and Surface platforms, announced that he will be leaving Microsoft. All of this comes after nearly 20 years of working at the company.
In an internal email, Rajesh Jha, Vice President of Microsoft, announced Panay's departure. In the message to Microsoft employees, Jha made it clear that Panay had made the decision to leave the company.
"After 19 incredible years at Microsoft, I've decided to turn the page and write the next chapter. I am eternally grateful for my time at Microsoft and for the amazing people I had the honor of building products with," Panay stated.
It's worth mentioning that Panos Panay's departure comes abruptly and somewhat surprisingly. This is noteworthy because he recently expressed excitement about appearing at a Microsoft event scheduled for September 21st. It is expected that the company will unveil updates about artificial intelligence and new Surface products at this event.
As you can imagine, having resigned from Microsoft, Panay will not be appearing at the company's event.
But what will happen to Panay's position? Yusuf Mehdi, Chief Marketing Officer for Consumers at Microsoft, will assume the role.
Who is Panos Panay?
Panos Panay joined Microsoft in 2004 as a group program manager. His excellent work allowed him to continue advancing within the company, eventually reaching the position of head of the Surface line and other products. It was in 2018 when he became the Chief Product Officer, where he led the development of Windows 11.
Panay's work was so commendable during these years that Microsoft's executives made the decision to promote him to Executive Vice President in 2021. This means he was part of the select group of executives who reported directly to Satya Nadella, Microsoft's CEO.
