Now that the purchase of Activision Blizzard is complete, Microsoft and Xbox have a pending matter to attend to: the future of Bobby Kotick. Through a statement, the companies confirmed that the current CEO of Activision Blizzard will remain in his position, but only for a few months.
Kotick will report his work to Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, until the end of the year and then leave his post. The controversial executive will help with the transition after the buyout at Spencer's request. As soon as the news broke, many gamers celebrated on social media.
“I have long said that I am fully committed to helping with the transition. Phil has asked me to stay on as CEO of ABK, reporting to him, and we have agreed that I will do that through the end of 2023. We both look forward to working together on a smooth integration for our teams and players,” Kotick said.
Gamers celebrate Kotick's departure from Activision Blizzard
In case you didn't know, Kotick has been a rather controversial figure in the industry. His businessman image never pleased gamers, who questioned several of the executive's decisions throughout his career.
One of his most recent scandals is related to cases of harassment and discrimination within Activision Blizzard. He was singled out for not acting despite knowing the situation in detail. He even denied all the problems in the studio's work culture despite several investigations on the matter.
Because of all this, gamers were happy to learn that the executive's days as head of Activision Blizzard are numbered. The community hopes that Xbox will expand its work culture to all the company's teams to avoid a repeat of the situation.
Many lamented that Kotick is one of the big beneficiaries of the Activision Blizzard purchase, as it is a fact that he will pocket millions of dollars from the deal.
