Paying and still having ads? What a deal

One of Elon Musk's goals after the acquisition of Twitter (now X) is to find a way for the social network to generate revenue, especially since the change of ownership has impacted advertising income. Today, the platform is different from what we knew, and ads have become increasingly prevalent. But that's not all because the billionaire and his team want to capitalize on the recent trend favoring subscription services to do something similar, and they will make it a reality soon.

X | Twitter will have 2 new subscription options

In recent weeks, there have been numerous reports about the imminent introduction of new subscription tiers on Twitter | X, beyond the current Premium option. Amid the anticipation, Elon Musk confirmed that they will soon reveal the new subscription levels that will be added to their Premium offerings for the social network, and the announcement has been controversial from the start. According to the billionaire, X Premium will have a low-cost subscription that will still include ads, while there will be another, at a higher price, in which the experience will be ad-free.

What is X Premium, how much does it cost, and what does it currently offer?

The simple idea of paying and still having ads did not sit well with the community, as it is considered nonsensical, especially because the announcement comes in a challenging week for online platforms after YouTube declared war on ad blockers, disrupting the user experience.

As of now, X Premium has two payment options: an annual plan for $1520 MXN per year and a monthly plan with a cost of $145 MXN. In both cases, users are guaranteed a priority position in the search engine and conversations, a greater number of posts between ad tweets, post-publication editing capabilities, the ability to upload 1080p videos, and early access to new features.

Although Elon Musk did not reveal the subscription prices, the first option that retains ads despite the payment could be related to the recent pilot program applied in New Zealand and the Philippines, where users pay $1 USD per year for each new account. But there is also anticipation regarding what will happen with the free tier, as it only allows reading tweets but not posting.
