In the past decade, Capcom chose to develop its own engine for creating video games, the RE ENGINE, which has since been used in more than a dozen games. Capcom is continuing down this path and has just announced that it is preparing the next version of its engine.
As part of a meeting with investors, Capcom spent several minutes discussing the qualities of the RE ENGINE, such as its use of C# code and modular design, as well as the wide range of platforms it supports and the growing number of projects that utilize it.
Capcom is working on a new version of the RE ENGINE
The development of the RE ENGINE dates back to 2014, but since then, Capcom has worked to improve and add features that have allowed it to age well. However, the Japanese company believes it's time to renew its in-house engine.
According to Capcom, the intention of developing the next-generation version of the RE ENGINE is to set a "new standard in engine technology" and address the need to handle content loads "5 times larger" compared to Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.
Not many details were provided about the new engine, and it was not shown in action, but Capcom referred to it by its codename, REX, derived from RE neXt ENGINE.
It's important to clarify that Capcom will not be developing the new engine from scratch but plans to incorporate the innovations into the existing RE ENGINE gradually.
