Despite the numerous challenges it faced during its development and production, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain has established itself as one of the best entries in the franchise and now holds a special place in the hearts of fans. However, one character caused quite a stir: Quiet.
Fans are well aware that the deadly sniper garnered attention and sparked controversy due to her "revealing outfit." The character was a topic of discussion on social media, which even prompted Hideo Kojima to say on social media that those who complained about the design would be embarrassed once they learned the justification for the costume.
Metal Gear Solid V Actress Shares Her Thoughts on Quiet's Design
Below, we will share spoilers from the 5th main installment of the Konami franchise.
In Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Quiet has a parasitic virus that grants her abilities and powers like super speed, invisibility, and more; however, it also forces her to breathe through her skin, which is why she wears the outfit we see for most of the game.
Is the outfit offensive? In an interview with IGN, Stefanie Joosten, who served as the motion actress and facial model for Quiet, addressed concerns about the character's attire. She explains that she is aware of the discussions and knows that some people disagree with the way the character was portrayed.
"This game came out in 2015, and I think the landscape of video games has changed quite a bit since then. People are looking for more representation, and I really understand that. Quiet's outfit is impractical. Even with the explanation that she was breathing through her skin, there were many other options they could have chosen. I agree with that," the actress stated.
Stefanie Joosten confessed that she herself thought that the outfit for the Metal Gear Solid V character was very revealing, but she respected the decision of the creative team and agreed with it. That said, she understands that players now want more diverse and accurate representation.
"This is basically my stance. It's a fantasy, and I also find that acceptable. But I do understand that having more diverse representation in video games for women and all minorities is something I would also encourage," the model said.
At another point in the conversation, Stefanie Joosten mentioned that she is very willing to work with Hideo Kojima again, although she believes Quiet's story concluded in Metal Gear Solid V. However, she thinks that exploring the character's past in a spin-off could be interesting.
But tell us, do you think Quiet's design is offensive? What do you think of Stefanie Joosten's statements? Let us hear from you in the comments.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is available for PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4.
