Konami is preparing a big return for Silent Hill. Their efforts to make it a reality date back several years, and fans can now see the first results. There are still several projects in development, including one that the company has not officially announced yet. It was believed to be canceled, but a new official clue reveals that the project is real and may still be in progress: Silent Hill: The Short Message.
What is Silent Hill: The Short Message?
You might recall that in mid-2022, months before Konami confirmed the return of Silent Hill, details of an unannounced game in the franchise emerged, which was codenamed Sakura, according to the reliable leaker Dusk Golem.
According to their sources, this project would be a kind of P.T. (a playable demo that would serve as a prelude and tease the next mainline game in the series), and it was later thought to have received the final name Silent Hill: The Short Message, judging by ratings, and it would use SMS technology.
However, this project was absent from the series-focused presentation, which led to speculation that it might have been canceled. Later that year, the insider shared more details about the plot, which would revolve around two characters, Anita and Maya.
Silent Hill: The Short Message shows signs of life
Well, almost 18 months after the first details of this supposed game leaked, the most detailed information about the project has just come out.
What's even better is that it comes from a very reliable source, the Australian Classification Board, the Australian government agency responsible for classifying films, video games, and other publications in the region.
In its annual report, the agency shares examples of some of the games it classified between 2022 and 2023, and what stands out is that among them is the as-yet-unannounced Silent Hill: The Short Message.
What's most interesting is that it explains in great detail why it gave it an MA 15+ rating (not suitable for those under 15).
Dusk Golem's leaks about Silent Hill were accurate
While more details continue to leak, we still don't know if Konami will release this project. Nevertheless, we won't share plot details that could be considered spoilers, even though nothing is official.
It's enough to say that Silent Hill: The Short Message will address themes like horror, mental issues, and even suicide. It also confirms that the game's events will take place in contemporary Germany, precisely in a building called The Villa. Furthermore, it verifies that the information from Dusk Golem (once again, despite the skeptics) was correct, as it mentions Anita and Maya, with the former being the protagonist, and the player would control her in a first-person perspective.
"In the board's opinion, representations of suicide and self-harm within the game occur in the broader context of discourse exploring mental health issues that encourage players to seek help or provide support to those in need," reads the description from the organization.
