Twitch Listens to Users and Removes Hype Chat
The streaming platform took to social media to confirm that the Hype Chat feature has its days numbered and will disappear on November 15, rendering users unable to use it after that date. Instead, efforts will be redirected towards Bits and Cheers.
In the announcement, Twitch stated that it will discuss this announcement and provide more information about the implications of discontinuing this feature in a broadcast on November 15 on the company's official channel. This news comes only 5 months after the official launch of the feature.
"Based on community feedback, we've decided to stop using Hype Chat on November 15th and invest more in Cheers and Bits in the future. We still believe in the value of pinned messages in fast-moving chats; viewers will be able to pin Cheers and Bits in the coming weeks," said the streaming platform.
What is Hype Chat, and Why is it Being Removed?
Hype Chat is a feature that allows viewers to pin a message for a limited time in the stream chat. The duration of the comment changes based on the donation amount, as users could offer up to a maximum of $500 USD. Essentially, it serves the same purpose as YouTube's SuperChat.
Although this feature aimed to help users highlight their messages for the content creator and other viewers to see, it fell out of favor with the community. The reason? The profit split between Twitch and the streamer.
A few weeks ago, content creator Tahlia revealed she received a donation of $85 USD from a fan who used the Hype Chat. The problem is she only received $35 USD due to the 70/30 split.
