This week was filled with significant announcements in the video game industry, with the most notable being the upcoming revelation of Grand Theft Auto VI, the most anticipated game of all time. The project does not yet have a release date, but could it debut later than predicted due to actors' strikes?
In case you're unaware, artificial intelligence has sparked a lot of debate and controversy in recent months, leading actors and writers in Hollywood to go on strike. While the waters have already calmed, and today specifically, the last of the two, the one involving actors in film and TV, reached a favorable resolution, the same cannot be said for the actors in the video game industry. There is a risk of them going on strike at any time after failed negotiations, which would cause actors to suspend their work with companies related to the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA).
Will the actors' strike harm Grand Theft Auto VI?
The wait for Grand Theft Auto VI has been extremely long, not only due to its colossal development time as one of the most ambitious titles in history but also because of the impact of the pandemic. Some fear that the strike may further delay the title.
That's why investors took the opportunity to ask Strauss Zelnick, the president of Take-Two, how this potential strike could affect Grand Theft Auto VI.
"Negotiations are expected to resume next week. We are optimistic. We deeply value all of our talent. We value excellent labor relations, and we hope to be able to reach an agreement that pleases everyone," said Zelnick (via IGN).
The executive's response alleviated many concerns, not only because he believes the matter will be resolved favorably for both parties but also because he assured that, in case it takes effect, the strike will not affect the development or release of Grand Theft Auto VI, as they are "completely protected."
The executive did not elaborate further, so we do not know precisely what he means.
