Ubisoft wants to insert invasive ads while you play? A test raises concerns

A video shows the alleged "experiment" by the French company

One of the short and medium-term fears, especially for players of previous generations, is that in-game advertisements become a trend and a monetization system adopted by gaming companies. Large gaming companies have acknowledged having plans for this, and a recent incident involving Ubisoft has raised alarms about what might come in the future.

Video shows Ubisoft placing ads in the middle of the game

A few hours ago, a reporter from the French gaming site XboxSquad.fr shared a video capture on Twitter, showing an apparent experiment conducted by Ubisoft for the holiday season. While playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey, he tried to access the map, and suddenly his experience was interrupted as the screen went black and displayed an ad with an offer to purchase Assassin's Creed Mirage with a 20% discount for Black Friday. The ad had the option to exit or go directly to an online platform to purchase the game.

Some companies want there to be ads in video games... yes, while you play

Controversy has erupted among a sector of players who have criticized this type of advertising tactics by Ubisoft, as well as those seeking to implement them in the industry as a new form of monetization for publishers.

A few weeks ago, Xbox faced strong criticism for the sudden appearance of an ad for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III while Xbox Series X|S users were navigating the user interface. In response, some players considered it unfair to have ads when they pay for a console, pay for a video game, or pay for a service.

The above is related to the monetization models of free-to-play video games as they depend on these types of strategies to add to their revenue. However, there is concern that the model will be adopted in gaming environments on consoles and PC.

What do you think about this possible future in video games?
