Developing video games is a titanic task on all fronts. Aware of the challenges involved in building an experience and launching it into the market, a key creative behind Starfield addressed players' unfair criticisms, although never explicitly mentioning the Xbox and Bethesda RPG.

Unlike the studio's previous titles, Starfield was a highly divisive game; while some loved it, others thought that it failed to meet the most demanding expectations. Now, Emil Pagliarulo, the director of design for the space-themed RPG, reflected on players' criticisms and the inherent challenges of creating video games.

"NOBODY SETS OUT TO MAKE A BAD GAME," STARFIELD DEV ADDRESSES UNFAIR CRITICISMS

Through an extensive thread on X (Twitter), the creative spoke about how players often give opinions without fully understanding the game creation process. He states that some people are "disconnected" from reality and are unaware of the necessary process required to materialize a project but still speak with "complete authority."

Emil Pagliarulo is understanding, acknowledging that consumers spend money on games, which gives them the right to complain. He himself admits to buying many titles each year and sometimes wanting to express dissatisfaction. However, he refrains from criticizing games on social media because he knows how difficult it is to create them and respects his colleagues in the profession.

“I'm not trying to change anyone's mind, because the internet. But given my position, I can't not share the truth. And that truth is, nobody sets out to make a bad game. And most game devs are incredibly talented... even if the game they release isn't up to par”, said the Starfield dev.

The creative then acknowledges that there is the perfect game that developers want to make, but it's not necessarily the game they can create. Therefore, the team has to strive harder and deal with all kinds of challenges, such as deadlines and creative decisions, to get closer to that ideal vision.

“So sure, you can dislike parts of a game. You can hate on a game entirely. But don't fool yourself into thinking you know why it is the way it is (unless it's somehow documented and verified), or how it got to be that way (good or bad)”.

Emil Pagliarulo states that, at the end of the day, "normal people" joined forces to work for years with one goal in mind: to provide fun and happiness to players.
