X-Men Games to be PlayStation Exclusive; Competitors Would Be Highly Restricted

Sony secures the gaming franchise license until 2038, according to leaks.

The information leak following the hack of Insomniac Games revealed the studio's planned projects for the coming years. While details are abundant, attention has turned to projects that would be PlayStation exclusives and would limit their competitors, including one related to X-Men.

PlayStation Secures Exclusive Rights to X-Men Video Games

According to information that became public after the leak of Insomniac Games documents, Sony has secured the rights to the X-Men franchise (via Kotaku) for exploitation in video games. As seen in a slide, the deal is in progress and will be valid until 2038, effectively making X-Men video games exclusive to PlayStation consoles for nearly 14 years. In some cases, they may also be released on PC, but not on Xbox, Nintendo, or any video game streaming service.

This agreement between Sony and Marvel stipulates that PlayStation and Insomniac have until 2035 to release the agreed-upon video games for the X-Men IP, with sales rights extending until 2038.

No PlayStation competitor can have new X-Men video games until after 2038

Regarding exclusivity, the chart indicates that Marvel will not allow the release or announcement of an X-Men video game on any console other than PlayStation, PC, or a streaming service. Additionally, X-Men characters will be restricted for the competition, preventing them from using them advantageously or exclusively. An example is given: "playing as Wolverine exclusively in Marvel's Ultimate Alliance for Xbox."

Marvel and Sony have also agreed that X-Men characters will be available for family and children's video games. However, in these cases, the announcement of their development or release cannot take place 45 days before PlayStation and Insomniac reveal details, previews, or announcements of their projects with the franchise. Finally, it is noted that Marvel will retain control and rights to X-Men characters in vintage video games, such as those from the 90s.
