The company stated that it does not want to disappoint fans of the saga with a controversy like the Ugly Sonic that Paramount Pictures went through.

Sonic the Hedgehog was controversial before its release because of the terrible appearance of its main character. The first version of Sonic did not convince fans, who criticized it for looking hideous and not doing justice to the SEGA character.
Subsequently, Paramount Pictures improved the modeling of the character, but was not spared from criticism. However, the controversy made the film attract even more attention from the general public. Despite this, Warner Bros. wants to avoid a similar situation at all costs for the Minecraft movie.
Jared Hess, director of the upcoming adaptation, stated that they don't want to disappoint fans, so he doesn't want to have an Ugly Sonic-like controversy in his project. The creative knows that there is a potential risk of repeating the stumble, since it is a live-action project.
"I think anybody that does any IP, they just want to avoid an 'Ugly Sonic' situation. I just can't disappoint the 10-year-olds, or they're going to murder us," said the creative.
Hess added that adapting a franchise like Minecraft represents quite a challenge, as there is no clear narrative. For that reason, he is happy to be involved in the project and will do his best not to disappoint fans of the popular Mojang Studio saga.
