Indiana Jones and the Great Circle was the big announcement at this week's Xbox Developer_Direct. The MachineGames title generated divided opinions with its first preview for one reason: many expected a third-person adventure and not a first-person adventure. The studio is aware of this, so it explained why it made that decision.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will be in first person for a good reason
Jerk Gustafsson, game director at MachineGames, explained that the first-person perspective is the studio's specialty and that, thanks to this, they will be able to offer a truly immersive experience. The developers want players to feel like they are in the shoes of Indiana Jones, so it was the obvious choice to achieve this.
"First-person gameplay is part of MachineGames’ DNA, and we wanted to see how we could use this to create a really immersive experience around stepping into the shoes of the world’s most famous archaeologist," said the creative.
The developer also explained that it is a way for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle to stand out from other action-adventure games. From his perspective, the first-person will make the game a unique experience.
MachineGames knows that not showing Indiana Jones' face could be a mistake, so they will alternate between first-person perspective for gameplay and third-person for cutscenes. Jens Andersson, the studio's design director, stressed the reasons and emphasized immersion.
"Our game is about putting you in the shoes of an iconic hero. Since we are doing this mostly in first-person, you have the chance to truly become Indy. First-person makes you part of this world – allowing you to explore and experience things more intimately," the creative concluded.
