The studio that took over Crash Bandicoot aims to return to its roots

The crisis of layoffs, cancellations, and closures plaguing the video game industry shows no signs of stopping. However, there is also hopeful news, and one such revelation has just come to light: a studio under Activision has decided to break away from the company and become independent.

Toys for Bob Goes Independent

Moments ago, Toys for Bob announced in a statement their departure from Activision and transformation into an independent studio, ending a relationship that was solidified in 2005 when the company acquired the studio, nearly 20 years ago. Toys for Bob expresses excitement about this decision, stating that it will allow them to return to their roots and work on what they love: "With the same enthusiasm and passion, we believe now is the time to take the studio and our future games to the next level. This opportunity allows us to return to our roots as a small and agile studio."

Toys for Bob's Next Game Could be Published by Microsoft

According to the statement, both Activision and Microsoft provided the support for the studio to ensure its independence. However, this does not mean the relationship has ended, as there are ongoing discussions with Microsoft for their new project.

After taking on the successful Skylanders franchise, Toys for Bob gained recognition for remaking the original trilogies of Crash Bandicoot and Spyro. The success led to the green light for a new release, Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time.

However, failing to meet Activision's high expectations led to Toys for Bob being relegated to supporting roles in the development of Call of Duty, a task unrelated to the type of games they historically worked on.

Amid the wave of layoffs in Microsoft's gaming business, it was reported that Toys for Bob's office was closed, and the remaining team would work remotely. However, this did not sit well with the studio, prompting them to take a significant step.

Therefore, it is now official that Toys for Bob has stepped out from under the controversial umbrella of Activision and will embark on a journey as an independent studio.
