Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is now available exclusively for PlayStation 5. In the days leading up to its release, fans revisited the first part to refresh their memories or simply make the wait more enjoyable. However, they immediately noticed that a recent update made some controversial changes.
The first part of the highly anticipated remake of the 1997 classic debuted for PlayStation 4 in 2020, while the PC port arrived in 2022. Since then, Square Enix has released occasional patches to fix minor bugs and make other changes.
Earlier this week, update 1.003 for Final Fantasy VII Remake arrived on PC and PlayStation consoles without prior notice. The development studio did not share more information about it and only mentioned that the patch addressed various bugs.
Now, the community has discovered that the latest update made some interesting changes. And yes, some players are upset.
Square Enix modifies Tifa's design and changes the ending of Final Fantasy VII Remake
Shortly after the release of the latest update, fans discovered that Square Enix slightly changed the cowgirl outfit worn by Tifa Lockhart in the Nibelheim flashback. Specifically, in the new version, she wears a black shirt under the white blouse, making the design less suggestive.
It's a subtle change, but it's easy to see why some fans are angry. It's no secret that the character is very attractive, so some accuse the Japanese company of censorship. Possibly, the developers changed Tifa's outfit during that flashback sequence to match the one she wears in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. This way, both games sync correctly, and continuity is respected.
The other significant change is in the final sequence of the 2020 video game, so we warn that we will share spoilers. Players noticed that the patch modifies a line of dialogue in both text and voice.
Originally, Aerith said, "Strange, the steel sky" in reference to the upper plate of Midgar. After the update, she now says, "this sky... I don't like it." Although both dialogues mean almost the same thing, fans claim that the new version is a more literal translation of the Japanese text.
According to the community, the latest patch, weighing 11 GB, also caused FFVIIHook and other popular mods for Final Fantasy VII Remake on PC to stop working correctly.
