Did the League of Legends MMO get canceled? Sharing good and bad news

Riot Games breaks silence and talks about the anticipated project

With a user base of millions and one of the most solid competitive scenes in the market, League of Legends sets the standard in the industry. Therefore, it's not surprising that Riot Games wants to expand that universe with new spin-offs and derivative projects. Unfortunately, one of the most attractive titles is still very, very far away.

In 2020, almost 4 years ago, Riot Games announced that it was working on an ambitious MMO set in the universe of the free MOBA. At that time, it was announced that Greg Street, who worked on World of Warcraft and Age of Empires, was the project's producer.

However, the designer left the project in 2023 due to "professional and personal" reasons, although he stated that the project was "in good hands." Since then, fans have wondered about the direction the League of Legends spin-off will take.

The League of Legends MMO is still alive, but its development has been restarted

After months of silence, Riot Games finally broke the silence and shared news, although perhaps not the ones fans were expecting. Marc Merrill, president of the company, took to his personal social media to confirm that the production is still ongoing, but it has been restarted.

"After much reflection and discussion, some time ago we decided to change the course of the project. This decision was not easy, but it was necessary. The initial vision simply wasn't different enough from what they can already play. We don't believe they want an MMO they've played before with a Runeterra paint job," commented the studio's co-founder.

Next, Marc Merrill states that they need to do something that represents a significant evolution in the genre, that does justice to the franchise universe, and meets the high expectations of the players. Although he's aware that taking a new direction will be a major challenge, he indicates that the developers are very motivated.

The executive confirms that Fabrice Condominas, who worked on Mass Effect 3 and Dragon Age: Inquisition, will serve as the executive producer of the new League of Legends MMO. Additionally, he states that Vijay Thakkar will be part of the leadership team of the title as the technical director.

Although it's good to know that the spin-off is still in progress, Marc Merrill warned that the team will remain silent for a long time, possibly several years. In other words, fans shouldn't expect any updates in the near future.

"Remember: no news is good news, because it means we're working hard and pouring our hearts and souls into creating something we hope you'll love. Thank you for believing in us and for your patience. We're incredibly committed to this mission and look forward to the adventure that awaits us and the stories we'll tell together," concluded the president of Riot Games.

But tell us, are you disappointed by this news? Do you think the MMO will meet expectations? Let us know in the comments.
